Force-Opening Doors: Streamlining an intricate Mechanic
In upcoming Patch 1.4.1.3, mechanics related with force-opening Doors have been reworked:
Over time, as more and more people got to play the game and provided valuable feedback, I made the observation, that apparently I failed in communicating the concept, how opening Doors by force wasn't intended as a legit way to advance, but rather as a last resort option to correct a mistake. 'Ruins of Calaworm' has a certain unique mechanic (inherited from classic 'Kalawaum'-Game), that Doors will lock behind you if you have the respective Key equipped (plus you lose the Key). This admittedly punishing mechanic is the main source of it's suspenseful Exploration and Puzzle content: being alert at all times, thinking of ways how to get a certain Key from location X to location Y without losing it on the way, possibly locking yourself in, even.
Original 'Kalawaum' was merciless in enforcing it's rules, yet here I am trying to provide a bit of leeway without altering gameplay too much (it's a Roguelike after all). That was the reason why I've been introducing chance-based options to force-open Doors in the first place. But it was a clunky, unreliable band-aid of a mechanic, badly taught and people fell for the trap of trying to break Doors left and right, presumably denying themselves the ressources necessary to advance to late game. A rework was due.
With the new streamlined version, Players may no longer break Doors, thereby risking their Equipment; instead the start the game with a set amount of Kicks, a rare ressource intended for dampening the impact of a mistake, or moment of carelessness.
- Players receive either 1, 3, 6 or 10 Kicks (this choice will be part of the Difficulty Sliders planned for full release).
- They can not gain any more.
- Kicking an initially locked Door has a 50% chance to succeed.
- Failed attempt does not lose a Kick, but Door remains locked, and from now on may only be openend with a Key.
- Kicking a Door that Players accidentally closed themselves, ALWAYS succeeds, but Key remains lost.
